We consider smooth solutions for first-order quasilinear hyperbolic
systems with relaxation term in several space dimensions. We show that
in a slow time variable, the formal zero-relaxation limit of the systems is
of parabolic type. Under stability conditions, the justification of the limit
can be done in a uniform finite time interval, or globally in time when
initial data are close to constant equilibrium states. Examples
of physical models are given as applications of the results.
